It tells the life story of Pavlínka, the daughter of a laborer and innkeeper, whose fate is filled with love, social ambitions, and unfulfilled dreams, and who ultimately returns to the basics of life, to naturalness and wisdom.

On a foggy, smoggy winter day, a group of terrorists hijacks a Prague bus with four passengers and the driver. They declare that they will hold the hostages until the government and parliament meet their demand to change the air pollution law. The drama of the hostages lasts one night and two days, during which a series of dramatic situations unfold. The plot takes us into the attractive world of high politics and the homes of ordinary people who are directly affected by the hijacking. Gradually, the film's fundamental question comes to the fore: Is it possible to resort to extreme measures, i.e., violence, in order to achieve environmental goals? Is it possible to achieve a cause that benefits everyone through terrorism?

Even great love does not necessarily overcome a difference of morals - although the young hero is very much in love, he still rejects the comfortable and easy existence he could lead thanks to the family of his future father-in-law. A tediously moralistic comedy, it picks up with all seriousness the morality of a socialist man who has broken forever with petty bourgeois ideas. It is almost twenty years after the war. Wounds of the past that have never fully healed, but are still carried by many in their hearts. Marie Vláčilová, a survivor of one of the prison camps in Germany, also carries the traumas of the time with her. Now, so many years later, a mass grave of prisoners from that camp has been found and investigators visit Marie to get any information they can from her about the camp. With her important information, she is then to become a crown witness for the prosecution in Germany and now prepares to travel. But this brings back more and more unpleasant memories - especially of her daughter Paula, who has been through German re-education and hardly knew her mother after the reunion...

The story takes place in the early 1900s, between the characters of a middle-class love triangle. Cecile, the beautiful bride, rushes to her fiance and instantly falls in love with an unknown man on the street, who soon turns out to be Sándor, her much-talked-about boyfriend and witness. According to the moral standards of the time, nothing can come of this love, since Sándor is an unbridled knight, whose perception excludes any relationship between Cecile and him. Although Sándor continues to visit the couple often, he also spends a lot of time abroad due to his raging emotions. Returning home from one of her trips, succumbing to rumours, Cecile feels that she is cheating on her husband. As befits a good friend, he enlightens Pál and confronts Cecile, the deceitful woman. But this is only the beginning of this story, which is full of twists and misunderstandings.
